Carrying a little stick and speaking loudly in Milwaukee

7.21.2005

Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr. moved a step closer to getting my approval today through no action of his own.

Contrary to previous reports, Roberts is NOT and has never been a member of the reactionary Federalist Society.

Certainly that doesn't mean he's another David Souter, but it's going to give Republicans already worried about Roberts' conservative credentials one more reason to be concerned.

I still like Bilmon's suggestion that Dems start fawning over Roberts, about how nice and fair and respectful of precedent he will be.

Then watch the White House scramble to insist, No! No! He really is conservative! Really!

I listened to Belling for a little bit on Wednesday to get his reaction to the nomination. A few self-described liberals called in reacting and said the nomination looked okay to them. Belling was miffed, because they weren't upset.

It's almost as if some conservatives would rather have the fight than the nominee.
