Carrying a little stick and speaking loudly in Milwaukee

12.06.2004

We've got an update to the DeLay rule change story from a reader who has received her letter on the issue from Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, of Wisconsin's 5th Congressional district. Here are a couple quotes from it:

"I believe that those who have committed illegal acts should be punished. At the same time, I do not endorse personal Member-to-Member attacks based on partisanship."

"This partisanship is especially dangerous in matters of foreign policy, when the lives of our troops are on the line."

Not surprisingly, the letter gives us no news of the Congressman's actual position on the rule change, but serves up plenty of rhetoric to chew on.

I dunno....maybe it's one of the effects of serving here in Iraq for almost a year...but I'm pretty tired of Republicans hiding behind "the troops" every time they need cover for some stupid, hypocritical move. Especially Republicans who could never be bothered to put their right hands up and actually serve. "The troops" have absolutely nothing to do with the Delay Rule, Mr. Sensenbrenner. And it's about possible criminal violations of Texas law....not "Member to Member" attacks. Of course....recalling your deathless prose in re: President Clinton, you know all about personal attacks....

Judging by the line "I believe that those who have committed illegal acts should be punished," it appears more likely that he didn't oppose the rule change since Tom DeLay hasn't been convicted of anything to this point.

Sensenbrenner's had his hands full battling over immigration matters in the intelligence bill (until now), so I'm guessing that's one reason he wanted to keep quiet on his position here.
